Many common plants and culinary herbs make excellent medicinal remedies.

Come along to this class and learn:

  •  When it is safe to treat basic conditions and illnesses at home.
  • * When it is time to consult a medical professional.
  • * Basic theory of herbal medicine.
  • * How to make your own herbal extracts and remedies.
  • * About some medicinal plants in detail e.g. calendula, thyme, rosemary, elder, red clover, nettle etc.
  • * How to make remedies from some common therapeutic plants that you can easily find in the town, city or countryside.
  • * How to make effective natural remedies from dried culinary herbs that you can easily buy from shops.
  • * About herbs that are excellent tonics to take throughout pregnancy and when breast-feeding.
  • * How to make effective extracts such as herbal infusions, decoctions, tinctures, oils, ointments & creams. (No specialist equipment is necessary. Extracts can easily be made using common kitchen equipment).


Several valuable skills for life including:

  • How to extract herbs
  • How to make safe and effective herbal medicines (that are often more potent and much cheaper than shop-bought products)
  • Basic theory of herbal medicine
  • About some of the properties and chemicals in plants that may give them their medicinal actions


  • Try out a range of herbal extracts that we’ll make together e.g. poultices, infusions, ointment, oils, creams, tinctures etc.
  • Browse through some books on herbal medicine


  • Real therapeutic herbal teas freshly brewed from certified-organic herbs (bear no resemblance to shop-bought teabags!)
  • Tinctures (herbs extracted in alcohol)
  • Herbal Syrups

*note: products tasted on the day will depend on what is seasonably available


  • A sample of one of the products made on the day e.g. first aid ointment (e.g. calendula, comfrey), herbal syrup etc.
  • A full set of course notes including recipes for herbal extracts, list of suppliers of ingredients, recommended book list, recommended herbal websites and courses for further study of herbal medicine.

Cancellations & Refunds: Payment of the full fee is required in order to book your place. Cancellations: if a cancellation is received 2 weeks or more before the class then the full fee will be refunded. Refunds are not available for cancellations received 2 weeks or less before the class date. This is because class size is always restricted to ensure quality of teaching and because lots of preparation, high quality stock and time go in to running these classes!


  • * A pen and a note pad. I will provide hand-outs with recipes and basic notes about each featured medicinal herb but you may wish to make more notes of your own.
  • * Some cash, credit/debit cards or chequebook if you want to buy herbal medicine-making ingredients, bottles and jars so that you can start making your own products at home (available from the optional Shop Session at the end of the class).


  • This is not a qualification in herbal medicine. After this class you will not be qualified to work as a professional herbalist. It is an introductory class.
  • However, it may count as CPD for some associations and organisations. Please contact me if you would like me to enquire about this class counting as CPD points with your organisation.
